Is medication abortion safe?
In 2021, a study of 52,142 abortion cases examined 2 abortion cohorts: the traditional model (in-person with ultrasound) and a telemedicine-hybrid model (either in person or via telemedicine without ultrasound). The study found that the effectiveness of treatment was higher with telemedicine (99.2%) than with in-person care (98.1%), and concluded the following:
- Telemedicine helps deliver faster, earlier abortion care within the 10-week window for medication abortion to be effective.
- Telemedicine abortion care looks to be as effective and safe as traditional in-person abortion care and does not impact rates of ectopic pregnancy or adverse events.
- Even in less-than-ideal conditions, medical abortions can be completed safely and effectively.
- A high majority of patients feel comfortable and safe using telemedicine for their abortions.
