How do I know if I am pregnant and for how long?
Most of us discover that we are pregnant after missing a period following sexual activity. Other typical symptoms of early pregnancy include vomiting or nausea, a.k.a "morning sickness." The easiest way to confirm that you are pregnant is by taking a urine pregnancy test available at most pharmacies or grocery stores. Take a urine test following the first day of a missed period (or later) to increase accuracy. You can also take a blood test at a lab, or have a doctor perform a pelvic ultrasound.
If you experience regular periods (at the same time each month), you can use the date of your last period to estimate how far along the pregnancy is. Note: this may not be an accurate approach if you experience irregular periods or have been taking birth control. If you have an irregular period, consider finding in-person care to determine the age of a pregnancy.
